Charles University

The Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Kralove is the oldest institution of higher education in East Bohemia. It was established as the first of the new medical faculties immediately after the end of World War II (October 13, 1945) and became a part of Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe and north of the Alps. Charles University was established on April 7, 1348 by Charles IV, the King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. The final and pivotal act in the establishment of Charles University was founding in 1366 of the Carolinum as the headquarters of the University. At the end of the 14th century the University had already achieved recognition on a par with universities of similar statute in Bologna and Paris. At present Charles University has seventeen faculties altogether, out of which fourteen are seated in Prague, two are located in Hradec Kralove and one in Plzen.
