Researchers´ Night 2022 – With All the Senses

On Friday, 30 September 2022, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové will again take part in the nationwide science-popularization event Researchers´ Night.

The theme of the 2022 edition is "With All the Senses". The event takes place in the Educational Centre of the Faculty of Medicine located at the University Hospital Hradec Králové.

Dr. Petra Kašparová from the Fingerland Department of Pathology will give a lecture in Prague, Albertov.

Wonderland behind the ear mirror

17:00–23:00, Educational Centre
How does the ear look and work from the outside and inside? How is hearing treated and cared for? What does a hearing test at the doctor's office look like and does it differ for children and adults?

You will learn the answers to these questions during a visit to the programme prepared by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. You will also be able to see for yourself what is in your ear using a video camera. Or you will be able to have your hearing examined by experts.

I'm breathing, I mean, I'm

17:00–23:00, Department of Pulmology
Get to know your lungs (almost) with all your senses! When you explore them, you'll engage not only your sight and hearing, but also your sense of touch and smell. Doctors from the Department of Pulmology have prepared a programme for you on the premises of the department. Let yourself be carried away by the fascinating world of modern medicine in teaching and practice!

Experienced experts, young doctors and students will guide you through the programme. The doctors will also answer topical questions that have been with us for more than two years – what covid does to our lungs or how post-covid patients are cared for.

From light to brightness

17:00–23:00, Educational Centre
Take a look into the fascinating world of visual perception and learn more about how it is interconnected with human consciousness! Why does our brain sometimes interpret an image differently from how the eye perceives it? What are optical illusions and how are they created? How can vision be measured?

The questions will be answered by experts from the Department of Ophtalmology, the Department of Medical Biophysics and the Department of Pathological Physiology. You will be able to try out various optical illusions with your own eyes. You can also have your eyesight examined as a preventive measure. Or you can take part in the measurement of reading speed in the Czech population and get an original bookmark.

The program is prepared for visitors of all ages.

Sixth sense

17:00–23:00, Educational Centre
The phrase "sixth sense" usually means intuition, which can sense a connection or danger. The traditional interpretation describes only five human senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. By touch we mean the amount of information we receive through receptors in the skin (touch, pressure, pain, temperature, vibration, touch in the narrower sense = identification of the shape of an object).

In fact, humans have even more abilities to perceive the state around and inside their bodies. Among these, perception from the locomotor system is perhaps the most important for our lives. This ability is practically neglected in primary and secondary school education and people are usually not even aware of this ability. Nevertheless, we use it all the time.

How come we don't bite our tongues? How is it that we can estimate the weight of the object we are lifting? What's really behind the kicking out after tapping the knee? That's what we'll try to answer at Researchers´ Night 2022.

Senses versus robotics

17:00–23:00, Educational Centre
Come and experience what it's like to hand over your touch to a robot! During robotic surgery, the surgeon primarily uses his or her sense of touch, as the robot is controlled remotely via a control console.

In the programme of the Department of Urology, you can become a trial surgeon for a while and test your tactile skills in practice while operating the Da Vinci robotic operating system.

Taste buds and intuitive eating

18:00–20:00, Educational Centre
Are you tired of different diets and restricting yourself from eating? Would you like to eat in a way that you are not constantly hungry and at the same time take care of your physical and mental health with food? Eat intuitively! In his lecture, Dr. Tomáš Soukup of the Department of Histology and Embryology, will advise you what it is and how to do it.

In addition, you will be able to learn more about your taste buds and types of taste.

A pathology full of senses

19:00–19:50, Charles University in Prague, Albertov, Hlavova 8
What do you imagine when you say "strawberry gallbladder"? Do you know what kind of illness is accompanied by the sound of "a new leather saddle under the rider"? And which bacteria smells like jasmine? This lecture, given by Dr. Petra Kašparová of the Fingerland Department of Pathology, will be about how pathology is not only meaningful, but also full of senses.

The trail of the senses

17:00–23:00, park between Educational Centre and the Department of Pulmology
Test your senses in the open air. On the trail, you will test them in a fun way in various tasks.

Can you recognise hidden objects by their sound? How sharp are your eyes, can you find all the clues? Do you dare to test your taste buds? Can you identify the smells and odours associated with health care? What if you only have to rely on the touch of a single finger?

All curious visitors who successfully complete the trail can enter a competition to win prizes.
