Week of the Brain - discussions and evening with board games

Once again, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové took part in the Week of the Brain and prepared
an intriguing program for students, employees and for the general public as well. The festival organized
by the Czech Academy of Sciences took place from the 14th to the 20th of March, 2022.

Healthy sleep

On Tuesday, March 15, 2022, from 6 pm, a discussion about Healthy Sleep took place at the LF HK Medical
The audience learnt how much sleep is necessary for the regeneration of our physical and mental activity, how
our sleep cycle works, common sleep disorders and how they are treated, or how shiftwork and blue light affect
our sleep. All this and much more was explained by an expert from the Sleep Disorders and Biorhythms Centre
at the University Hospital Hradec Králové, MUDr. Vratislav Sedlák, Ph.D.

Several interesting questions were raised directly from the audience, so Dr. Sedlák answered questions about
the baby's sleep patterns or about eating before going to bed and its impact on sleep quality and overall

We're glad that so many visitors showed interest and thus confirmed that this is a sought-after topic that can
provide valuable and practical insights. Many thanks to doctor Sedlák for his brilliant knowledge and advice.

Nutrition and the brain

and the University Hospital Hradec Králové took place in the large hall of the Bio Central cinema.

On Wednesday, March 16, from 6 pm, a discussion between five experts from the Faculty of Medicine
and the University Hospital Hradec Králové took place in the cinema hall of the Bio Central.
The invitation to the discussion was accepted by
  • prof. MUDr. Miroslav Kuba, CSc. from the Department of Pathological Physiology,
  • MUDr. Tomas Soukup, Ph.D. from the Department of Histology and Embryology,
  • MUDr. Julius Šimko, Ph.D. from the Department of Neurology,
  • Mgr. Pavla Stankova, Ph.D. from the Department of Physiology and
  • MUDr. Vojtěch Erbrt from the Psychiatric Clinic.
Our guests opened with selected topics showing the connections between nutrition and the brain from their
professional perspectives.

Dr. Soukup focused on a healthy lifestyle, nutrition and regeneration and related topics such as circadian
rhythms, fasting, glycemic roller coaster etc.

Dr. Erbrt then introduced the connection between mental illness and metabolic syndrome, the links between
the brain and the digestive tract, and mentioned an interesting phenomenon of pathological obsession with
healthy or proper nutrition – Orthorexia.

Dr. Stankova has dedicated her research to energy metabolism and in her presentation, she talked about
metabolic flexibility, connections between the functions of our brain and metabolism, so-called reward and
regulatory brain circuitry and eating disorders.

Professor Kuba focused on the role of food supplements and their commercialization, and on trends and myths
about the harmfulness of selected foods.

The introductory part ended with a presentation by dr. Simko, who spoke about the influence of poor lifestyle
on the emergence of various neurological diseases. He also mentioned the harmfulness of excessive
consumption of food supplements or the impact of the psyche on the patient’s health.

Thanks to the large audience in the cinema hall as well as online live on YouTube, the discussion was really
interesting and continued even after the main program was concluded. Responses to questions we did not
manage to go over during the live stream are now available in the comments below the recording on YT.

Evening with board games

On Thursday, March 17, slightly different kind of brainteaser took place. DeskoWellness a relaxed evening
with board games.

It was intended mainly for students and employees of LF HK and their enthusiastic friends but it was also
attended by several professional players from the Poutník Board Games Club in Hradec Králové, who
introduced and taught the participants some new games and strategies from their wide game
portfolio. DeskoWelness evening concluded this year’s successful Week of the Brain.

Special thanks go to all the above-mentioned guests for their insights and advice related to the functioning
of our brain and, of course, also to the large audience for their participation and interesting questions.

We are already looking forward to the next year and more new findings!
