Paediatric Pre-state Practice – at East Kent, United Kingdom, 06/12/2021 – 31/12/2021
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to become a doctor, and not just any kind, but a Pediatrician! This December, I had the opportunity to do my Pediatric Pre-state practice in East Kent, United Kingdom. I intend to work in the UK in the future, and this medical elective simply helped me solidify my career choice.
A week before my elective was scheduled to begin, the East Kent Hospitals administrative team organized a thorough induction to help familiarize me with the workings of the hospital, the amenities available for students and the COVID protocol. On the first day of my elective, I had a PPE fitting appointment, to ensure that I had the right equipment to keep me safe at all times during the pandemic. I was placed at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford and spent four weeks at the Padua Pediatric ward. I was under the supervision of Dr. Christian Peter, a Pediatric consultant, Pediatrics site lead and Children’s Diabetes team lead at WHH. Along with spending my days with him, I was scheduled to spend time with other doctors in the ward who specialized in various other fields such as Pediatric Gastroenterology and Neurology.
A typical day started off with the handover meetings after which they would have teaching sessions for the foundation doctors regarding various pediatric topics such as pediatric radiology or epilepsy. After this I would shadow one of the doctors in the wards, at the CAU or A&E. I really enjoyed my time at the A&E as there I would encounter a wide range of patients and was lucky to occasionally assist in their diagnostic procedures and treatment. Dr. Christian also placed me with the NICU team who were very welcoming and showed me how they perform their baby checks. During my time there I also witnessed a twin C-section and resuscitation.
Clinics aside, I really enjoyed my time at Ashford! It’s a small town, and the people are very welcoming, friendly, and helpful. During the weekends I would spend my time in the city center at the Christmas markets and since Ashford International was so well connected, London was just a stone’s throw away! Being there in December, with all the Christmas lights, music, and cheer, made the experience all the more magical.
I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and I look forward to working in the UK in the near future. This experience was very enriching, and I was lucky to be under the care of such an encouraging and supportive team of doctors. I would like to thank our university for their support and the study department for their cooperation for making this a possibility! I would also highly recommend these electives to our juniors, as these experiences truly help broaden your horizons and guide you in making your career choices. Best of luck!
