Academic Department of Internal Medicine

The department provides instruction for the Charles University Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové. It includes eleven divisions pertaining to the particular fields of internal medicine and six departments. The Academic Department of Internal Medicine currently has 18 professors, 15 associate professors, 30 assistant professors, and 51 teachers with a scientific degree (Ph.D. or D.Sc.).

Divisions

Angiology Head: Associate Professor Radovan Malý, M.D., Ph.D. We teach diagnostics and non-surgical treatment of diseases of arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels.

Diabetology Head: Associate Professor Alena Šmahelová, M.D., Ph.D. Our division specializes in the prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of diabetes mellitus, including potential complications associated with the disease.

Endocrinology Head: Professor Jan Cáp, M.D., Ph.D. We deal with the diagnostics and treatment of hormonal disorders resulting from the malfunction of glands with internal secretion (directly into the bloodstream). !e most common problems of this sort include thyroid disorders.

Gastroenterology Head: Professor Stanislav Rejchrt, M.D., Ph.D. We focus on the diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract - from the esophagus to the rectum, including liver disease, diseases of the biliary tract, and glands such as the pancreas, where digestive enzymes are produced.

Gerontology Head: Božena Jurašková, M.D.,Ph.D. We specialize in the causes and effects of aging, specific diseases associated with aging, and diagnosis and treating such diseases.

Hematology Head: Associate Professor Pavel Žák, M.D., Ph.D. Our focus is on blood and its components, especially blood cells. We also deal with blood clotting and all the factors that contribute to clotting.

Clinical Biochemistry Head: Associate Professor Pavel Živný, M.D., Ph.D. Our interest lies in the fundamental biochemical processes in the human body in terms of human health, treatment of diseases, their diagnostics and prevention.

Cardiology Head: Associate Professor Josef Štásek, M.D., Ph.D. Our responsibilities involve the diagnostics and therapy of heart defects, ischemic disease, heart failure, disorders of heart rhythm, and other heart diseases.

Nephrology Head: Professor Sylvie Dusilová Sulková, D.Sc., MBA We deal with the diagnostics of kidney diseases and their treatment, kidney transplants, and dialysis. We pay attention to the systemic conditions that affect the kidneys (such as diabetes or autoimmune diseases) and systemic problems that result from improper kidney function.

Pulmonology Head: Associate Professor František Salajka, M.D., Ph.D. We are engaged in research, diagnostics, prevention, and treatment of diseases and disorders of the respiratory system, particularly the lower respiratory tract (trachea, bronchi, and lungs), as well as diseases of the pleura and mediastinum.

Rheumatology Head: Associate Professor Petr Bradna, M.D., Ph.D. We deal with the diagnostics and treatment of rheumatic diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system (joints, bones, spine, ligaments, and tendons).
